MP Linda Lapointe in Ohio and Wisconsin with the Standing Committee on International Trade to promote Canadian interests in the context of NAFTA renegotiation

OTTAWA, October 6, 2017 – The parliamentary session is begun for Linda Lapointe, MP for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles who went to Columbus, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from September 26 – 29 with the Standing Committee on International Trade to promote Canadian interests to its American counterparts.

This committee trip was held as part of its study on the priorities of Canadian stakeholders with an interest in bilateral or trilateral trade between Canada, the United States and Mexico.

In Columbus and Milwaukee, the Committee met with Canadian and US companies from Ohio and Wisconsin, academics, politicians and government officials. These meetings allowed the Committee to learn more about the trade and economic relationship with Canada and the US States on how this relationship promotes employment and economic development.

This is a very important exercise for the MP for Rivière-des-Mille-Îles, “Canada and the United States have a highly integrated economy where millions of jobs depend on one another. By promoting Canadian interests to our southern neighbors, we ensure that we have a constructive dialogue in order to continue to foster trade and investment that ultimately supports good jobs and economic development. “

It should be noted that during the course of the trip, the Committee discussed issues such as NAFTA changes negotiations, environmental protection, regulatory co-operation and labor mobility. Various issues related to the development of current and future technologies, including e-commerce, were also discussed, including the challenges for Canadian and American businesses and workers and how to take them into account in trade policy. The information obtained on the trip will be incorporated into a report summarizing the findings of this Committee’s study.
